When the great sacrifice performed by King Dasharatha had been fully completed, six seasons passed by. Then, in the twelfth month thereafter, on the ninth lunar day of the auspicious month of Chaitra, under the nakṣatra presided over by the goddess Aditi — known as Punarvasu — with five planets each stationed in their own exalted positions, with Cancer rising as the ascendant, and with Jupiter, the lord of speech, conjoined with the Moon at the horizon, at that supremely auspicious celestial moment, Queen Kausalyā gave birth to a son who was the Lord of all the worlds, reverently saluted by every being in all of creation, endowed with every auspicious mark and quality that the sacred sciences enumerate. That child was none other than a partial manifestation of Lord Viṣṇu himself, of immeasurable fortune and divine glory, born as the son who would carry forward and bring honour to the ancient lineage of Ikṣvāku. He came into this world with eyes of a deep reddish hue, arms that were long and mighty, lips the colour of a red lotus in full bloom, and a voice whose depth and resonance was like the solemn thunder of the dundubhi drum. His name was Rāma.
